One of cinema’s most iconic films, Rocky was released in 1976 and became an instant classic. Not only did Sylvester Stallone star in the film, but he also wrote the screenplay. It propelled him to superstar status, and began the Rocky franchise that now includes 8 sequels.
The movie was set and shot in Philadelphia, and it’s success has made the film synonymous with the city.
Rocky’s House
The house used as Rocky’s home is located at 1818 Tusculum Street in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. The house exterior and other houses on the street haven’t really changed at all since the movie was filmed in the mid 1970s. The row of houses at the end of the street, however, has been demolished.
If you plan to visit, please know that the house is in an area that is extremely sketchy and is known for drug use. I had a taxi driver who brought me here, and he even told me he’s not comfortable there. He said if it had been after 4pm, he probably would have refused to take me there. I hate to say anything bad about the places I visit, but this was definitely the most uncomfortable I’ve been visiting any location. I felt it important to include this info, so that any readers who wish to visit are aware of the situation. That being said, Philadelphia overall is a wonderful city and I really enjoyed my visit.
Adrian and Paulie’s House
Only a few blocks away is the house that belonged to Adrian and her brother Paulie. Unlike Rocky’s house, this house has changed extensively since the movie was filmed. In fact, it’s nearly unrecognizable. Please remember that this is a private residence.
Lucky Seven Bar
Just around the corner from their house is the location of the Lucky Seven Bar. The building was only seen briefly in the movie, and has been torn down in the years since the the movie was filmed. The location still sits empty.
Philadelphia Museum of Art
The most recognized and visited locations from the film is the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This is the location where Rocky runs up the steps during his training montage. The site gets many visitors every day, many reenact the scene buy running up the stairs.
At the top of the stairs is the entrance to the museum, along with a large fountain. This area also has excellent views of the Philadelphia skyline.
To help you line up your shots, there is a plaque in the ground at the exact spot where Rocky stood. The imprint of his Converse All-Star shows is in the plaque.
At the base of the stairs, to the right, is the Rocky Statue. The statue was made for the third Rocky movie, and was then donated to the city. The statue stood in several locations around the city before being placed in this current location.
Mighty Mick’s Gym
The exteriors of Mighty Mick’s Gym was filmed at 2147 N. Front Street. The building looks mostly abandoned.
Adrian’s Pet Shop
Right across the street from the gym is the location where Adrian’s pet shop stood. The store has been torn down, but the buildings on either side are still standing.
