The Sixth Sense became one of the most talked-about movies of 1999. From obscure writer and director M. Night Shyamalan, the movie’s twist ending became one of the most shocking endings in memory. It not only launched Shyamalan’s career, but inspired a whole new era of psychological thrillers. For the very few people who haven’t seen this movie yet, I’ll avoid spoilers.
Starring Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, and Toni Collette, the movie told the story about Malcolm Crowe providing therapy to awkward child Cole, while coping with a distant relationship with his wife. The movie takes place in Philadelphia, and was filmed at numerous locations in the city.
Cole’s House
Cole’s house, where he lives with his Mom, is located at 2302 St Alban’s Place. This small rowhouse faces into an inner courtyard, which is seen several times in the movie.

At the house directly across the courtyard is a bench where Malcolm sits to observe Cole. When I visited, there was some renovations occurring at that house.

Malcolm’s House
Malcolm and his wife live nearby, at 2006 Delancey Street. This historic townhouse has a distinctive green door, and stretches up four stories. I have no doubt this house is worth a lot of money now.

Anniversary Restaurant
Malcolm and his wife share an awkward anniversary dinner at a local restaurant. At the time of filming, the restaurant was known as the Striped Bass. It later become a steakhouse and then a chocolate store. It appears there is currently not an operating restaurant at that location.

Cole’s School
Scenes depicting Cole’s school were filmed at Pierce College, located at 1420 Pine St. The school was used for both interior and exterior shots.

Birthday Party House
Cole attends the birthday party of a fellow student. This is where he sees a red balloon floating up the staircase. These scenes were filmed at a house located at 2408 Pine St.

Cole and Mom Stuck in Traffic
A particularly moving scene occurs when Cole and his Mom are stuck in traffic, and their car sit idling. This is where they have their moving scene where Cole passes on a message from his grandmother. This was filmed right in front of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Church Scene
Malcolm and Cole meet up at a church for a lengthy conversation. The Sixth Sense used St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, located at 243 N Lawrence St. This beautiful church was used for both exterior and interior shots.
