Thanks in part to the classic John Hughes films, Chicago has long been a popular choice for filming. It has been both the setting and filming location for many movies and shows.
On This Site…
Some of the film locations in Chicago include Home Alone, Uncle Buck, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Chicago is also a popular setting for sitcoms. Shows like Married With Children and Perfect Strangers used real Chicago locations for their establishing shots. Sadly, Chicago lost one of it’s famous locations. The house from Family Matters was torn down several years ago.
Don’t Miss…
The Chicago Cubs
Not only are the Chicago Cubs a legendary baseball team, but they play at one of the most legendary stadiums, Wrigley Field. Even if you aren’t a big baseball fan, it’s worth going to a game just for the atmosphere.
The Art Institute of Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago is the cities largest and most renowned art gallery. It is home to well known paintings such as American Gothic, A Sunday on La Grand Jette, and Nighthawks.
Michael Jackson’s Birthplace
Less than an hour away is Gary, Indiana. This town is where you can visit Michael Jackson’s birthplace and childhood home. The house is not open to the public, but you can view it from the sidewalk in front.
Please keep in mind Gary has a reputation as a rough city, with one of the highest crime rates in the US. While the Jackson’s house is just off the interstate, you may want to make your visit brief.
How To Get Around
Much like many other cities, a car rental is not a great idea if you plan to stay in the downtown area. Chicago has a well designed metro system making it easy to get around.
If you wish to visit some of the filming locations outside the downtown area, a car will be the best way to get around. Many of the John Hughes movies were filmed just north of the city.
