Arnold Schwarzenegger, traditionally known for action roles, stepped into the role of a teacher in the 1990 comedy Kindergarten Cop.
Of course, Kindergarten Cop still featured a lot of action, and it was that mix that made it a box office success, grossing over $200 Million. It also gave the world a number of crazy quotes, mostly spoken by children but only understood by adults.
The movie was filmed on location in Astoria, Oregon. This town has hosted a number of movies over the years, due to it’s diverse geography and quaint small-town feel. The Oregon Film Museum is located in the downtown area. It features exhibits on a number of films from the area, including The Goonies, The Ring, Free Willy, and Short Circuit.
Astoria isn’t a town most people would get to visit, but fortunately the first cruiseship I worked on visited for a day. It is a beautiful town that is nice to explore, and has breathtaking views.
John Jacob Astor School
The school featured in the film is John Jacob Astor School. This elementary school was used for all external shots, and a few internal as well. Filming took place while school was out for summer vacation. This allowed the crew to film throughout the day without disturbing school activities. A lot of local children were featured as extras, especially during the fire alarm evacuation scenes.
If you are going to visit the school, please be respectful of the space. You can read my guidelines for visiting locations like schools.
Downtown Astoria
A number of scenes were filmed with the characters walking through downtown Astoria. This cute area is full of small shops and local restaurants, and well worth exploring.
If you have ever visited Astoria, please let me know in the comments below. I’d love to hear what you thought of the town and the area.
