Taping Date: January 24th, 2003
Air Date: Same day as taping
Where to get tickets: No Longer in Production
Back in late 2002, my friend and I had signed up for a taping of Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Since the show taped in NYC, we booked flights decided to make a long weekend of it.
The Ordeal
When we submitted our request, we were told to expect an email a week before the taping with our tickets. And then 2 days before the trip, we still didn’t have the email. As a result, I got worried and called the number provided for issues. The girl I spoke to told us our names had been lost from the list and we weren’t booked for the show. She apologized and said she’d check something and get back to us. Honestly, we were quite disappointed as we had planned the whole trip around the show. Fortunately, later in the day, this wonderful girl called back and told us she pulled some strings and got us on the list. We were back on track!
The Show
On January 24, 2003, we flew to NYC, checked in to our hotel, and saw some sights. Then we headed over to Rockefeller Center where Late Night with Conan O’Brien filmed. Because we wanted to make sure there would be no more issued, we went early. On arrival, we met the nice audience coordinator that helped us out. We gave her a thank you card with some maple candies we brought. She was very sweet and chatted with us for a bit. And then it was time to follow the crowd through security and up the elevators to Studio 6A.
Late Night With Conan O’Brien, like most talk shows, was filmed in real time, and the show was really fun. The guests were Alan Cumming and Maya Rudolph, along with musical guest Morcheeba. Because we were sitting in the front row, we could see everything really well. The house band, the Max Weinberg 7, was right in front of us. One of the band members even shook our hands as we were leaving after the show.
The SNL Offer
As we headed out, we ran into the nice Audience Coordinator who helped us out. Then she asked how long we were in the city and we said we were there until sunday. She asked if we were interested in seeing Saturday Night Live….. UMMM YEAH!!! She said she couldn’t get us in to the main show saturday night, but they were doing a live special on sunday night to air during the SuperBowl Halftime, and she could get us in. We didn’t even hesitate. You can read more about that experience in my Saturday Night Live recap on this page.
