Beetlejuice is a 1988 hit fantasy comedy film that starred Michael Keaton as the title character. The movie also starred Alex Baldwin, Geena Davis, Catherine O’Hara, and Winona Ryder. The success of the movie led to an animated series, a Broadway musical, and a sequel in 2024.
The movie’s exterior locations were filmed in the village of East Corinth, Vermont. The village is part of the larger town of Corinth, which has a population of about 1500 people. Director Tim Burton and the producers found the village was the ideal spot to depict the fictional town of Winter River, Connecticut. The movie opens with an aerial shot of the entire town, before the action moves to the house at the centre of the story.
In September 2024, I was on my way to compete at the New Hampshire Highland Games, which are held just an hour away from East Corinth. So it was easy to add a stop in the town to my road trip. It’s a very cute little village, and quite picturesque.
The Beetlejuice House
The home at the centre of the action was a fake house built on a hill overlooking the town. The hill can be seen from several locations, including a spot by the Corinth Historical Society Museum.
The hill and the land surrounding it are private property, and the owner has several warning signs up. It’s important to never trespass.
The Covered Bridge
The bridge where the Maitland’s crash is located on Chicken Farm Road, crossing over the Taber Branch stream. While the bridge is real, it is not actually a covered bridge. The wooden cover was installed for the movie, and removed when filming was complete.
After filming the original movie, the covered bridge was moved to a local ski hill called Northeast Slopes. This hill is located just a few minutes away from East Corinth along Highway 25. The original bridge has been slightly modified and houses the power plants for the rope tows.
The bridge from the 2024 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sequel is also located here. It’s also been modified, with one side open and facing the ski hill. I spoke to one of the volunteers at Northeast Slopes, who provided me with the following information:
“The big central structure is directly from last summer’s filming, it was gingerly dismantled and carefully delivered back to Northeast Slopes by the set builders, then a local Timberframer reassembled it in traditional New England barn building method of mortise and tenon with pegs. It appears slightly different because we needed it to function as ski shelter and public event pavilion, open on the ski hill side but just as it appears in the movie on the road side and both ends.”
The Hardware Store
The hardware store exteriors were filmed at 657 Village Road. The building is now in a state of disrepair, and is almost unrecognizable from the movie. In the movie, it also had a fake extension added to the side to add a barber shop.
The Winter River Fire Department
Next to the hardware store is the Fire Department. The production team actually took a garage attached to a local house, and added a facade to make it appear like a fire station.
Blake Memorial Library
Across the street from the hardware store is the Blake Memorial Library. The original library opened on this location in 1902, but burnt down in 1945. The library was rebuilt but was smaller and more modern looking. For the filming of Beetlejuice, the production added a false front to make the library look like the original design.
The steps leading up to the library appeared briefly as Adam passes by the dog that would lead to his demise just minutes later.
Miss Shannon’s School for Girls
Near the end of the movie, we see Lydia leaving school on her bike. The building is actually the East Corinth Masonic Lodge located at 778 Village Road. This particular location has a large movie poster on their shed door. There is also a map of locations in the town, and a statue of Beetlejuice in the upstairs window.
