Long before he made waves in Hollywood, Tom Green hosted his own talk show, The Tom Green Show, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The show was filmed entirely in the city until the show was brought to the US.
Tom Green was a local comedian and rapper. He attended Algonquin College, and had his own show on the college’s radio station before launching on Rogers Television.
Rogers Studios
In 1994, Tom Green launched his show on Rogers Community Television. The show was filmed at the Rogers Studios facilities located on St. Laurent Blvd. In Canada, community television stations are similar to American public-access channels, and as such, Tom Green was not paid for his show.
In variety-show style, the show featured local guests, and musical performances. The show was filmed with a live studio audience. The show also featured comedy skits that Tom would film in public.
The Green House
Tom Green was well known for some of the outrageous stunts he pulled. Many of these were directed at his parents, who lived in a quiet suburban neighbourhood. One of the stunts Green pulled was to paint the house plaid when his parents were out of town. Another time, he turned the house into a petting zoo, filling it with farm animals.
The house has changed owners since the show, and has also been renovated.
The Bus Stop
In one particular stunt, Tom had his dad’s car painted with the image of a naked woman and the name “Slutmobible” on the hood. When his father woke up to go to work, Tom’s camera crew was there to capture his response. Realizing he couldn’t drive his car to work, he walked to the local bus stop. Tom took the car to the bus stop, much to the horror of stunned bus passengers.
